Developmental origins of tumor suppression
We use ancestral and developmental p53 functions as entry points to discover mechanisms that may be deranged in human cancer.
Many canonical p53 outputs are not sufficient to explain tumor suppression in vivo. Because p53 genes predate their role in cancer prevention, developmental systems provide an unbiased way to search for older and potentially essential functions.
The laboratory combines discovery in flies with vertebrate models and human cancer data to determine which mechanisms are conserved, how they protect tissue integrity, and where they may create therapeutic opportunities.
